### Start Line Showdown: 2026 Formula 1 Cars Struggle to Get Off the Mark The 2026 Formula 1 season is just around the corner, and teams are still fine-tuning their cars to get the best possible start. ### Start Line Showdown: 2026 Formula 1 Cars Struggle to Get Off the Mark
The 2026 Formula 1 season is just around the corner, and teams are still fine-tuning their cars to get the best possible start. However, the new regulations have introduced a significant challenge: starts. Gone are the days of a straightforward, synchronized start, where drivers would take off in a smooth, orderly fashion. This year, the start line is a minefield, with drivers struggling to get off the mark quickly and consistently.
Ferrari, the reigning champions, have been at the forefront of this challenge. Their new power unit, designed around a smaller turbo, has been a game-changer. However, the traditional timing of the start procedure didn’t allow for this extra revving, and the FIA had to intervene to introduce a new five-second high-revving window ahead of the normal start timing. This change has effectively canceled out the Ferrari advantage and has created a level playing field.
Practice starts were run on the grid at the conclusion of each session in Bahrain, and by the end of the three days, some of the teams that struggled earlier on were starting to get a handle on it. However, drivers still have concerns, especially about being able to get away well consistently. “I think it’s just very random at the moment,” said Oscar Piastri. “And I think we’re all kind of learning what makes a good start, what makes a bad start. There’s some pretty big pitfalls you can find if you get yourself in trouble.”
The key to success lies in managing the power and the procedure. The MGU-K kicks in at a certain point, and drivers need to optimize this to get the best possible start. It’s a bit more complicated than last year, and the procedure is much longer. However, teams are managing it quite well, and the spread of starts is much higher than last year.
The Australian Grand Prix on March 8th will be the first test of these new starts in real racing conditions. Will the teams have ironed out the kinks, or will we see a chaotic start line? Only time will tell.
