A Smaller Footprint, a Bigger Reach: Rivian Unveils Pricing and Specs for the R2 Electric SUV

There’s a new adventurer rolling into town, and it’s wearing the Rivian badge. The highly anticipated Rivian R2, a compact sibling to the groundbreaking R1S SUV, is finally ready to hit the road, bringing with it a wave of affordability and practicality without compromising on the core values that define the Rivian brand.

Two years after its initial unveiling, the R2 has shed its shroud of secrecy, revealing pricing details, range estimates, and performance figures that are sure to have the electric vehicle world buzzing. While the full-size R1S captured hearts with its rugged capability and luxurious appointments, the R2 aims to democratize the Rivian experience, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Rivian is offering two distinct R2 models at launch later this year: the Performance and Premium. Both share the same robust mid-size platform, in-house developed electric motors, and a capable 87.9-kWh battery pack, ensuring a consistent Rivian DNA. The R2 Standard will follow suit by the first half of 2027, with an even more budget-friendly version, boasting a 275-mile range, arriving by late 2027.

Performance Meets Efficiency: The R2 Lineup

The R2 Performance, with its starting price of $59,485, is Rivian’s statement piece in the compact EV segment. Packing a punch with 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque from its dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup, it sprints from 0-60 mph in a mere 3.6 seconds. The EPA-estimated range of 330 miles ensures ample travel for weekend adventures and daily commutes alike.

But the R2 Performance isn’t just about raw power. It’s equipped with semi-active suspension for optimal handling on varied terrains, 21-inch all-season wheels for confident grip, and unique drive modes (Rally, Soft Sand, Sport, and Launch) allowing drivers to tailor the experience to their surroundings. Integrated tow hooks, a premium 9-speaker audio system, and heated and ventilated seats come standard, adding a touch of luxury to the adventure-ready package.

The initial production run of the R2 Performance will feature a Launch Package, adding an exclusive green paint hue, a 4400-pound towing package, and a lifetime subscription to Rivian’s semi-autonomous driving program, enhancing both style and capability.

The R2 Premium, starting at $55,485, takes a slightly different approach. While sacrificing some outright performance with 450 horsepower and 537 lb-ft of torque, it compensates with an impressive 330-mile EPA-estimated range. It still boasts a respectable 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds, proving that speed and efficiency can coexist harmoniously.

The Premium trim shares the Performance model’s heated and ventilated 12-way power front seats, Rivian’s premium audio setup, and a Birch wood-accented interior, elevating the driving experience with a touch of refinement. 20-inch wheels, an Esker Silver exterior color, and integrated tow hooks round out the standard equipment package. Buyers can opt for additional features such as the 21-inch wheels, various exterior colors (Catalina Cove, Forest Green, Glacier White, Half Moon Grey, and Midnight), and the towing package.

Value-Driven Adventure: The R2 Standard

The R2 Standard, arriving at a compelling $49,985, is where the magic truly begins. By switching to a rear-wheel-drive configuration and dialing back the power output to 350 horsepower and 355 lb-ft of torque, Rivian has managed to squeeze out an impressive EPA-estimated range of 345 miles. While its sprint to 60 mph takes a slightly longer 5.9 seconds, the Standard model still delivers a spirited driving experience, making it ideal for daily commutes and long-distance adventures.

Rivian hasn’t skimped on the essentials, equipping the Standard model with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 12-way power driver’s seat, and four drive modes (All-Purpose, Conserve, Snow, and Sport) to ensure versatility on various terrains. While the Premium model’s Birch wood accents are absent in the Standard trim, it maintains Rivian’s commitment to quality and practicality.

The brand is also reaffirming its promise of a truly affordable entry point into the Rivian family, announcing an even more budget-friendly R2 variant with a 275-mile range, priced at a remarkable $45,000. This model, arriving by the end of 2027, will truly democratize electric adventure, making it accessible to a wider range of buyers.

Interior: Combining Adventure and Refinement

Inside the R2, Rivian offers two distinct interior styles: Black Crater Signature and Coastal Cloud Signature. The Black Crater takes its inspiration from volcanic rock, embracing a dark, sophisticated tone, while the Coastal Cloud Signature is brighter and airier, featuring soft textile accents for a more relaxed ambiance. The base R2 Standard model will be offered exclusively with the Black Crater interior.

Taking a cue from Toyota’s legendary SUVs, the R2 Performance and Premium trims get a power rear window, perfect for hauling surfboards or simply letting the breeze flow through the cabin.
