Polestar 6 Delayed Until 2029, But Will It Ever Arrive?

It's been almost four years since Polestar first showed off a two-door sports car concept that would later be confirmed for production as the Polestar 6. That launch was initially targeted for 2026, but matters have changed in the years since; with plans well underway for three other models in the next few years, a back-burnered Polestar 6 may not arrive until 2029. According to the United Kingdom's Auto Express, that targeted launch date of 2029 is a result of shifting priorities at the brand. The three models announced last week include a wagon variant of the existing 4, a new 2 sedan, and a larger 7 SUV, all cars that should draw much wider customer interest than the two-door 6. It’s been almost four years since Polestar first showed off a two-door sports car concept that would later be confirmed for production as the Polestar 6. That launch was initially targeted for 2026, but matters have changed in the years since; with plans well underway for three other models in the next few years, a back-burnered Polestar 6 may not arrive until 2029. According to the United Kingdom’s Auto Express, that targeted launch date of 2029 is a result of shifting priorities at the brand.

The three models announced last week include a wagon variant of the existing 4, a new 2 sedan, and a larger 7 SUV, all cars that should draw much wider customer interest than the two-door 6. And that date is if the car comes to pass at all; as a Polestar insider reportedly told the outlet, “The 6 is still in the plan, but plans can change.” Polestar has been teasing the 6 extensively since that debut, even showing off a higher-performance BST variant in 2024.

If the 6 does arrive in 2029, it will be one of the most extensively delayed cars to ever reach a showroom; the seven-year gap from the reveal of the Polestar 6 to its potential debut in 2029 is roughly the length of a typical car generation for a more conventional brand like BMW or Mercedes, meaning that the Polestar 6 would be about as far removed from its first concept as the current M5 is from the debut of its predecessor.

The delay is particularly rough for the 500 buyers who put down $25,000 deposits on special LA Concept editions of the 6. That run sold out in just a week—but any buyer still holding onto that deposit will have to wait the better part of a decade to get behind the wheel of their stylish electric roadster. At least the delay is more bearable than the wait for the second-generation Tesla Roadster, which has been scheduled for an apparent final reveal nine years after it was first shown and made available to reserve.
