GM Expands 10-Speed Transmission Recall to More Models

GM is expanding its 10-speed transmission recall saga to include more models. The latest addition brings 43,732 new cars into the campaign, including the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. These vehicles were equipped with the "Electronic Transmission Range Select," or ETRS, system, which was reserved for high-end models and 4x4s. The expansion covers all 2022 models with ETRS, while a smaller recall covers 1,055 trucks with incorrect transmission control module software. The trucks affected are 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500s, GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500s, and 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500s. These vehicles were equipped with the “Electronic Transmission Range Select,” or ETRS, system, which was reserved for high-end models and 4x4s.

The incorrect software update does not fix the inherent issues with the valve body, nor does it prevent further deterioration of performance. It simply prevents the transmission from commanding random, unsafe shifts at speed. GM has released an updated valve body for its light-duty 10-speeds, which it hopes will provide permanent relief to customers. However, the effectiveness of this remedy is still unclear.

This latest expansion is part of GM’s efforts to address faulty valve bodies in its 10-speed gearboxes. The recall affects virtually every rear-wheel drive vehicle GM builds, dating back to 2019. GM has issued two new addenda to the campaign, including the expansion of the recall to more models and a smaller recall directed to customers who already had their transmission control modules reprogrammed.
