As a seasoned automotive journalist, I’ve always been fascinated by the world of off-road driving. Recently, I had the opportunity to experience it firsthand in Saudi Arabia, where I joined the Dakar Rally. The event, which takes place every year, is one of the most grueling off-road races in the world, with competitors facing extreme terrain, harsh weather conditions, and treacherous roads.

My journey began in Riyadh, where I met up with a team of Land Rover enthusiasts who had entered three brand-new Defender Octa Dakar D7X‑R trucks in the Stock category. Our convoy set off early in the morning, and we quickly discovered that the roads in Saudi Arabia were unlike anything we’d ever seen before. The terrain was a mix of sand, gravel, and rock, with towering dunes that seemed to stretch on forever. We drove for hours, the sun beating down on us as we navigated through the desert, our Land Rovers effortlessly handling the rough terrain.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. We encountered our fair share of challenges, including treacherous sand dunes, rocky outcroppings, and even a few surprise sandstorms. However, the Land Rovers handled everything with ease, their advanced suspension systems and traction control systems keeping us on track even in the most extreme conditions.

One of the most memorable moments of the trip was when we encountered a group of locals who were driving on the highway. They were attempting to cut across the median and highway, using the unpaved dirt road to get past us. It was a Forza Horizon moment, and I couldn’t help but chuckle at the absurdity of it all.

As we continued on our journey, I was struck by the level of expertise and detail that goes into every Land Rover. From the heated seats to the cooled armrest compartment, every feature was designed to provide the ultimate driving experience. And when we encountered a few mechanical issues, the team was able to troubleshoot and fix them with ease, a testament to the reliability and durability of the Defender.

In the end, our expedition was a resounding success, with the Land Rovers handling everything we threw at them. As I reflect on our journey, I’m reminded of the words of the great off-road enthusiast, Phil Hill: “The most important thing in off-road driving is to have fun.”
