Ford to Charge Extra $495 for Front Trunk on 2026 Mach-E

The online car configurator for the 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E is out—and Ford is officially charging folks an extra $495 if they want a frunk. We knew this was coming, thanks to a Ford Authority report from late 2025, but now the details are clearer. If you want the front trunk on any 2026 Mach-E, it’s an extra $495. Ford’s Mach-E brand manager Teddy Ankeny said in a YouTube video posted by The Electric Duo that folks simply aren’t using the frunk storage; therefore, the Blue Oval is making the storage space an optional extra. “Yeah, so we were learning that customers were using their frunk, but perhaps not as much as we had originally intended,” Ankeny said. “And so, in order to kind of preserve that customer choice, we have made it optional for the 2026 model year.” That’s quite the stretch to remove a feature in the name ...

That’s quite the stretch to remove a feature in the name of “customer choice.” For those that do want and make use of the frunk, they’ll now be forced to decide if it’s worth an extra $500 or so for the right to do as much. If you were curious about what the area under the hood looked like without Ford’s frunk solution in place, a Reddit user already has it covered. In short, it’s a slightly overwhelming gaggle of electronics, various fluid reservoirs, and empty space. There’s no pretty plastic covering or any dressing in place of the frunk—but on the bright side, access to the 12-volt battery is definitely improved. That said, the forward storage compartment has been losing its appeal lately anyway. Ford steeply reduced the size and usability of the frunk when it added a heat pump to the Mach-E for 2025. Volume dropped from 4.7 cubic-feet to just 2.6, making it a sad day for the folks who used their frunks to regularly eat large volumes of shrimp.
