Three years later, the Bolt is back, proving that sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best. The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt takes the proven formula of its predecessor, refines it with modern technology, and delivers an affordable, practical electric car that should give every other automaker pause.

Simple, Yet Effective

The 2027 Bolt’s recipe for success is deceptively straightforward. Take a compact EV platform that’s already proven itself over a decade. Inject it with the latest electric motor and a durable lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery. Season it with a 262-mile range, a standard NACS charging port, and an optional hands-free Super Cruise system. Finally, bake it all together for a starting price of around $30,000. That’s it. Simple, effective, and remarkably affordable.

No Hype, Just Value

Let me be clear: I’m not saying the Bolt is some revolutionary electric marvel. It’s not going to blow you away with blistering acceleration or futuristic styling. What it does offer is something far more valuable in today’s market: a practical, reliable, and affordable electric car that’s perfect for everyday driving. The market doesn’t need another 9,000-pound electric SUV with 1,000 horsepower. It needs sensible, human-scale EVs like the Bolt.

Back From the Brink

Resurrecting the Bolt was no small feat. Moving the assembly line from Michigan to Kansas, engineering a new subframe for the battery and motor, stockpiling parts, and using virtual crash testing to speed development took a lot of work. But the Bolt team pulled it off, proving that building a sensible EV doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

Evolution, Not Revolution

The 2027 Bolt is almost physically identical to the 2023 Bolt EUV. It retains the same compact footprint and impressive interior space. The only noticeable difference on the outside is a refreshed front fascia with new headlights. The EUV, which was essentially a crossover version of the original Bolt hatchback, is gone, but don’t let the labeling fool you. The 2027 Bolt still drives like a small, nimble car.

Punchy Performance and Improved Handling

The new Bolt is powered by a punchy X76 drive unit, borrowed from the larger Chevrolet Equinox EV, and paired with a 65 kWh LFP battery. It delivers 210 horsepower and 169 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels. While the torque figure is down slightly from the previous model, a higher final drive ratio helps compensate. The result is surprisingly peppy acceleration, even at highway speeds. The Bolt feels planted, grips the road well in corners, and handles with a newfound agility.

This improved handling is partly due to a switch to Michelin 215/50R17 tires. The Bolt engineers highlighted these tires as a key factor in the car’s more engaging driving dynamics. Gone are the days of tire squeal at the slightest provocation. The Bolt now corners with confidence and composure.

Safety and Tech

The 2027 Bolt comes standard with a suite of 20 safety features, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking in various scenarios, automatic high beams, and more. An optional HD Surround View camera system doubles as a built-in dash cam, recording footage from all angles during your drive.

For those who want the ultimate in driver convenience, the optional Super Cruise hands-free highway driving system is available. While it adds $6,000 to the price tag, it makes long road trips less tiring and still keeps the Bolt under $36,000, making it one of the most affordable ways to experience hands-free driving.

Under the Skin: EV refinements

Beyond the visible changes, the 2027 Bolt has been significantly upgraded as an EV. It features a new electronic architecture, enhanced battery management and motor control software, vehicle-to-home power capability, five times more processing power, and over-the-air update support. These advancements address past concerns about the Bolt’s battery fire issues and ensure a more reliable and future-proof ownership experience.
