### How It Drives
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 has undergone a significant transformation, but it’s still the same dependable and fun-to-drive compact crossover that has made it Mazda’s bestseller. The updated design is more practical, with a slightly larger wheelbase that adds more rear-seat legroom and a wider door opening, making it easier to get in and out. The new model still doesn’t stray far from its predecessor in terms of dimensions, but the changes are enough to make it more appealing to some buyers.
Under the hood, the 2.5-liter inline-four engine produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired with a responsive six-speed automatic transmission. While it may not be the most powerful engine, it’s still adequate for daily driving, and the transmission does a great job of delivering an impression of enthusiasm. Mazda’s suspension tuning is also excellent, providing a delightful ride and handling that’s perfect for family chores.
However, the turbocharged engine that was available on the previous model is still missing, which would have improved off-the-line performance and delivered more punch for the chassis to exploit. Despite this, the CX-5 remains an excellent handler and satisfying companion.
### What It’s Like to Live With
The dimension that has changed the least between this CX-5 and its predecessor is overall width, which is still 73.2 inches wide, exclusive of mirrors. This means the interior feels cozy, but some buyers may find it too narrow. The new model’s design is more focused on traditional instrumentation and controlling information screens through rotary dials and knobs, which may appeal to some but feel generic to others.
The loss of a volume knob is a notable disappointment, especially considering the previous CX-5 had one of the best driver-to-crossover interfaces in its class. The new design is more tech-centric, which may not be ideal for some users.
### Should I Buy One?
The CX-5 and CX-50 have swapped positions, with the CX-50 still available with the turbocharged engine and traditional Mazda instrumentation. Pricing is close enough that most buyers will be able to choose the version they want based on personal preference. If tech is your priority, the CX-5 feels like the fancier option for now.
