The 2026 Jeep Cherokee is a refreshingly revamped compact SUV that’s back to reclaim its spot in the market. With a new hybrid powertrain, a more spacious interior, and a better fuel economy, this Jeep has won us over. The vibe shouldn’t change much in the dirt, either, as the new Cherokee’s approach, break-over, and departure angles are still impressive for an on-road-focused crossover.

The 19.6-degree approach and 29.4-degree departure angles are better compared to the similarly equipped 2023 Cherokee, but the break-over angle is worse, at 18.8 degrees, versus the old equivalent model’s 19.5. That’s in part because of the longer wheelbase. A more aggressive off-road-oriented variant will likely make an appearance in the future, with bells and whistles such as a two-speed transfer case and locking differentials.

The 2026 Cherokee lineup is limited to base, Laredo, Limited, and Overland trims, none of which carry those beefier mechanicals. We haven’t even lifted the hood yet, and you’ll find a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four, part of a hybrid powertrain producing a combined 210 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. Output routes through an electronically managed continuously variable transmission—instead of belts, it relies on an electric motor and a planetary gearset—to a standard all-wheel-drive system that features a rear-axle disconnect for better fuel economy under coasting.

EPA estimates are a palatable 39 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 37 mpg combined. That’s vastly better than the last Cherokee, which at best managed 21 city, 29 highway, and 24 combined. The hybrid powertrain produces more gusto than the previous model’s 2.4-liter four did, but it’s still behind the old Trailhawk trim’s 2.0-liter turbo, which mustered 270 horses and 295 pound-feet.

The cabin has taken a huge leap forward. We spent our time in a midrange Limited that was fluffed up with a few options, and it’s quite nice inside. While we didn’t have a hard time finding a bunch of harder plastics, there’s so much variation in design and feel that the Cherokee really does feel like a Costco Wagoneer. You get a boatload of standard kit across the lineup, including passive entry, a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, rain-sensing wipers, and a whole host of driver aids, including Jeep’s Level 2 Active Driving Assist tech.

How’s it drive? Really nicely, actually. The Cherokee’s small lithium-ion battery provides enough juice to the electric motors for decent off-the-line motivation, plus a claimed electric-only top speed of 62 mph. When we dug deep enough into the throttle to kick the gas engine into action, it popped alive without any fuss.

The only real negative was the engine note. The 1.6-liter doesn’t sound great. When the CVT lets the revs rise—on a long uphill stretch, for example—it’s accompanied by a straining groan that ain’t exactly music to these ear bones. But most of the time, you shouldn’t notice it unless you’re accelerating hard. The rest of the package jells together nicely as well. The steering and the brake pedal provide about as much feedback as a broken PlayStation controller, but they do what you want them to, as you expect them to. The brake is easy to modulate, and we perceived little, if any, harshness in the blend between regeneration and friction. The cabin was Toyota-level quiet, muting the winds whipping up the California coastline. The ride was pretty chill too, with few disturbances reaching the cabin in a pronounced way.

Pricing for the 2026 Jeep Cherokee starts at $36,995 for the base model and rises to $44,995 for the top-spec Overland. Given the prices of its closest competitors and just how much more space this new model has, we think Jeep has positioned the Cherokee well against its contenders. It’s a smooth, inoffensive hybrid with a much better interior and (for a Jeep, at least) solid fuel economy.
