Dodge has done something unexpected with the new Charger: they’ve ditched the ubiquitous V8 rumble for a twin-turbo inline-six. The move might ruffle some feathers amongst purists, but after spending time behind the wheel of the 2026 Charger R/T, I can confidently say the Hurricane engine isn’t just a capable replacement, it’s a thrilling evolution for this American icon.

A New Kind of Roar

The R/T ditches the old 5.7-liter Hemi V8 for the Standard Output (S.O.) version of the new 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, churning out 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque. That’s a healthy chunk of power, and it feels every bit as potent as the numbers suggest. But the real magic lies in the way the engine delivers that power.

Smaller turbos spool up quicker, injecting an immediate hit of torque from low RPMs. You don’t have to wrestle the Charger into its powerband like you would with the previous V8. This engine feels responsive and eager, pulling strongly from the moment you touch the gas pedal. The standard suspension offers a comfortable ride, soaking up bumps and imperfections with ease. However, if you want to carve corners with more precision, the optional Performance Handling Group is worth considering. This bundle adds Brembo brakes, sport-tuned suspension, and larger wheels and tires, transforming the R/T into a more serious performance machine.

The Performance Handling Group bridges the gap between the R/T and the Scat Pack in terms of handling prowess, but the R/T still retains its more forgiving nature. It’s less twitchy and more predictable at the limit, making it a more approachable car for everyday driving.

Living with the Charger R/T

Stepping inside the R/T, you’re greeted by a well-appointed cabin that doesn’t feel cheap. The base model comes with comfortable cloth seats, and upgrading to the performance seats adds a touch of sporty luxury. The infotainment system is responsive and easy to use, with a large touchscreen display for navigation and entertainment.

Rear seat passengers have plenty of legroom, and the hatchback trunk offers ample cargo space. The Charger R/T is surprisingly practical for a performance car, making it a viable option for families who need a bit more space.
